ARC Review: Sacrifice (Elemental #5)

Sacrifice (Elemental #5) by Brigid Kemmerer

Publisher: Kensington Teen, 2014
324 pages, paperback
Source: Netgalley

Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Earth. Fire. Air. Water.

One misstep and they lose it all. For the last time.

Michael Merrick understands pressure. He's the only parent his three brothers have had for years. His power to control Earth could kill someone if he miscalculates. Now an Elemental Guide has it in for his family, and he's all that stands in the way.

His girlfriend, Hannah, understands pressure too. She's got a child of her own, and a job as a firefighter that could put her life in danger at any moment.

But there are people who have had enough of Michael's defiance, his family's 'bad luck'. Before he knows it, Michael's enemies have turned into the Merricks' enemies, and they're armed for war.

They're not interested in surrender. But Michael isn't the white flag type anyway. Everything is set for the final showdown.

Four elements, one family. Will they hold together, or be torn apart?

My Review:
Michael is the oldest of the Merrick brothers, but he is also a father figure to the boys. It's been that way since his parents were tragically killed. Michael doesn't have an abundance of money but he makes up for that with the amount of love and support he shows his brothers and friends.

When we saw Michael in the previous books, at times, he was this very serious and semi strict older brother. We didn't have any good insight other than the fact the he has always had a weight on his shoulders due to his girlfriends death and it having a domino effect in his families life.

In Sacrifice, we see a completely different side of him. We see him as the worried brother, guardian and boyfriend. The one losing sleep over someone taunting him and his brothers right outside of the family home. The one losing sleep over how he's not only going to provide for not only his family but for Hunter. The one losing sleep over wondering the affects this impending battle will have on Hannah and her son. With all this stress we would expect him to be the typical Michael but that is far from the truth. Michael breaks down on occasions. He realizes that he is over is head but he also realizes that he is only human. He can only handle so much with the cards life dealt him.

This book was just amazing. It portrayed the feelings of an older siblings spot on, it still had the intense action and it had the brotherly love we all hope from the Merrick's. Im very sad to see this series end... unless, you know, Brigid Kemmerer wants to give all her fans 20 novellas in the near future. My favourite part in the book was when the boys let Michael know that they would be okay. That he didn't need to worry about them 24/7. They knew Michael needed a break from his brothers and the chaos and they were gladly to give it to him.
