Synopsis (from Goodreads):
Serena knows a few simple things. She will always be owned by a warlock. She will never have freedom. She will always do what her warlock wishes, regardless of how inane, frivolous, or cruel it is. And if she doesn’t follow the rules, she will be tarnished. Spelled to be bald, inked, and barren for the rest of her life—worth less than the shadow she casts.

Then her ownership is won by a barbarian from another country. With the uncertainty that comes from belonging to a new warlock, Serena questions if being tarnished is really worse than being owned by a barbarian, and tempts fate by breaking the rules. When he looks the other way instead of punishing her, she discovers a new world. The more she ventures into the forbidden, the more she learns of love and a freedom just out of reach. Serena longs for both. But in a society where women are only ever property, hoping for more could be deadly.

My Review:
Serena is such an amazingly strong character. It’s not exactly known that she’s strong at he start of reading the book because it takes a while getting used to the way the community runs and how women are treated. Then some details about Serena are explained and it shines through the book just how strong she has had to be and continues to be. She was always pushing the boundaries on what is acceptable and I loved how she never really bowed down all the way. She was always cutting corner on the rules and I loved her rebellious streak. It made the book and the inequality so much more bearable.

Zade was such a mysterious character because his purpose and his beliefs weren’t talked about a lot and weren’t really disclosed. I loved the way he acted toward Serena because he wasn’t cruel and wasn’t used to her subservient behavior. I thought that the chemistry between the two was great and I loved their interactions. They were so uncertain with each other and I loved trying to figure out Zade’s angle.

Overall this book was pretty great and I loved how the author managed to put it together. I was a little over whelmed with how the society was governed in this book but I was able to get past it when I learned more about Serena and what she went through as she tried to figure out her own role in society. I can’t wait to read more books in this series.
